1. Περιγράψτε σύντομα το έργο σας

SAZMAN is a project that promotes bike culture and, in a wider sense, DIY culture. Through bike repair workshops, film screenings, art and experiential workshops, collage, zine-making, upcycling, and group bike rides Sazman creates empowered communities in various cities in Greece, starting from Rhodes and Athens. What connects us is our love for bikes, our love for creating something with our hands – and our concern about the environment.

2. Ποιος ήταν ο στόχος του έργου;

SAZMAN is inspired by the feminist makerspace movement, a movement encouraging women, queers, trans intersex and other marginalised communities to acquire technical knowledge on various fields, such as wood work, silk screen printing, smithery and hacking, among others. SAZMAN’s goal is to create such - safe - feminist makerspaces in Greece. The project draws upon horizontal learning methods (learning from each other and sharing acquired knowledge with own community) and grassroots practices.

3. Ποιος συμμετείχε στη διαδικασία σχεδιασμού;

Sazman and collaborators leads the various workshops

4. Εάν μπορούσες να αλλάξεις κάτι, τι θα άλλαζες;

5. Πώς επηρέασε το έργο στην κοινωνία των πολιτών;

In numbers, we managed to have 165 active participants and a passive audience of more than 1000 people during Phases I + II.
In terms of social impact, the benefits of the project are not only limited to the participants. A fertile ground is created for the greater community in Rhodes to create safer spaces, to think of new ways of commuting and to collaborate towards a better future for the place itself. The inclusion of children opens up the possibility to play down the still prominent gender stereotype from a young age.
In Phase III we aspire to create a physical feminist makerspace where the trainees become the trainers and the project is run by the community itself.

6.Πως η καινοτομία, η έμπνευση και η συμπερίληψη εφαρμόζονται στην πρακτική σας;

The concept of the project itself is an inclusive one. We offer the workshops to specific target groups (women, trans, inter, queer folk) with the goal to empower them and give them confidence to pick up tools, to create or repair things with their own hands. This is something new in Greece and especially in Rhodes, where the feminist community is quite small, gender stereotypes still exist, nationalist and racist ideas are very prominent. Bike culture is now booming and it is a great opportunity to be there, offering these kinds of workshops.
In our art workshops we urge people to create something from nothing, from "trash" or scraps that we have available. People who had never created anything in their lives came out of the workshops proud of their own creations, asking when could we do that again. It's amazing to see people get motivated and inspired and at the same time feel safe in a space created by their own communities.

7.Πως χρηματοδοτήθηκε η βέλτιστη πρακτική σας;

Sazman was supported by “START – Create Cultural Change”, a program of the Robert Bosch Stiftung, conducted in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Thessaloniki and the German Association of Sociocultural Centers, supported by the John S. Latsis Public Benefit Foundation and the Bodossaki Foundation.

8. Πως διαχύθηκε/προωθήθηκε η βέλτιστη πρακτική σας;

Social media, word-of-mouth, website, flyers, stickers, merchandise, radio interviews, online newspaper articles
