Nikolaos Sofianos, Mphil

Independent Energy Expert

Nikolaos Sofianos, 40, holds an Mphil in Development Studies from the University of Glasgow in Scotland (2005). He also holds a B.A. (2003) in Philosophy and History of Science from the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. 

He worked for the Institute of Energy for SE Europe (IENE) from 2007 to 2017. Currently, he is an independent energy expert while he is member of IENE’s BoDs. Over the years Mr. Sofianos has published several studies and specialized papers on energy, economy and policy issues and contributed articles on energy, geopolitics and related subjects. He has authored, co-authored and edited several Studies and Research Papers. Through his research, he succeeded high level of expertise in collecting and analyzing energy and macroeconomic indicators and other statistical data. He served as Energy Consultant and Development Economist expert, providing advisory services to large institutional clients (ministries, regulatory authorities, associations) and companies in the energy policy, oil, gas, electricity and RES sectors, while he participated in several working groups with the main goal to promote climate change policies, decarbonization processes and clean coal technologies. As an energy expert, he specializes in relations between governments and companies with a focus on energy, environmental, and public sensitive issues. Over the years Mr. Sofianos has developed first class networking abilities having co-operated with various public and private institutions and organizations in the whole SE European region (ministries, organizations, regulator authorities, NGO’s, associations, companies etc.) acted several times as a bridge between companies and governments of SE Europe in order to facilitate interaction between them and market openness.
Furthermore, during the years 2008-2012 he was the project coordinator for Dissemination activities of the EU funded GEOFAR project (Geothermal Finance and Awareness in Europe – Intelligent Energy Europe (IEE)). This European project included experts from France, Greece, Portugal, Spain and Germany with the main goal to create new funding schemes and simplify investments in deep geothermal projects. Mr. Sofianos has also prepared a number of tenders for EU and national funding programmes (IEE, FP7, Horizon 2020, ESPA, LIFE etc).
