2024: Karagiozis in 31 B.C. in Alexandria

Inspiration for Contemporary Creation

What is the relationship between Goebbels and Hadjiavatis? Cavafy and Cleopatra? Nionios and Churchill? And in what way is a monkey bite responsible for the Asia Minor expedition? Artifactory presents the shadow puppet performance for children and grown-ups Karagiozis in 31 B.C. in Alexandria, inspired by C.P. Cavafy’s poem “In 31 B.C. in Alexandria”.

Artifactory presents the shadow theater performance "Karagiozis in 31 B.C. in Alexandria" with artists Spyros Angelopoulos and Athos Danellis. Featuring original musical composition and live performance with sounds and exquisite instruments from the Mediterranean by Evgenios Voulgaris, this performance draws inspiration from Cavafy's poem "In Alexandria, 31 B.C." and will take place at the Roman Odeon of Nicopolis on July 13 and 14, 2024, as part of the Ministry of Culture's "All Greece, One Culture" program.

The play highlights the Battle of Actium, a pivotal event in Hellenistic antiquity, offering a unique experience that reflects contemporary issues of misinformation, the paradoxical nature of war, and the influence of fake news on shaping public opinion.

The performance is complemented by a thematic tour of the Monument of Augustus, starting at 19:30. It is intended for audiences aged 15 and over.

This performance is part of the interdisciplinary and multi-collective project "Cavafy: 4 Poems for Nicopolis," which aims to connect Cavafy's poetic universe and his relationship with antiquity, as revealed through four poems, with the archaeological site of Nicopolis and its history.
