About the call

Xenophobia

Hate speech

Arts and Culture as tools

General conceptual framework

We are looking for Best Practices promoting “Art and Culture Vs Xenophobia” meaning Art Intervention and Cultural Mediation vs Xenophobia and Hate speech which foster inclusion and a multicultural society with Arts and Culture as tools. All Best Practices will be presented in an “Art and Culture Vs Xenophobia” event in Athens and Norway as mentioned in the about page.
Please have a look at the definition of terms here: xenophobia, hate speech, art intervention and cultural mediation.

Xenophobia from the Greek xenos, meaning “stranger” or “foreigner”, and phobos, meaning “fear”, is the fear or hatred of strangers or foreigners or of anything perceived to be foreign or strange.

Hate speech is public speech or expression that denigrates a person or persons on the basis of alleged membership in a social group identified by such attributes as race, religion, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, age and physical or mental disability. Hate speech helps to spread, incite, promote or justify hatred, violence and discrimination against foreigners or strangers and foreign or strange ideas and practices.

Art intervention refers to art which enters a situation outside the art world in an attempt to make all the participants aware of a condition that they previously had no knowledge of. The aim of art intervention is to empower the silent and underprivileged Other in its interface with the expressive dominant Self and raise awareness in dialogical and participatory synergizing.
Cultural mediation is the process of bringing together different cultural and social realms. Its practices include participatory and community arts, interreligious dialogue, and diverse forms of cultural and social synergizing. It aims at helping to make every person, visitor and spectator an actually equal socio-cultural player.

You are welcome to use any or all of the following criteria for a good practice:

  • 1. Sustainability of a good practice based on long-term observation of xenophobia contexts and artistic mediation
  • 2. Context of study regarding the beneficiaries – who they are and how they are involved in the project i.e. migrants/refugees/other?
  • 3. Assessment of the Project by the beneficiaries and separate assessment by external social practice experts
  • 4. Cultural Identity issues (gender, age, religion etc.) – level of awareness
  • 5. Doing things together, remaining culturally distinct – conscious participation, distinctive awareness
  • 6. The role of the audience in the artistic mediation initiative – awareness, respect, equanimity.
